What to Look For in a QR Code Generator

Before comparing specific tools, establish what matters for your use case. The core feature set includes: static QR code generation (free on many tools), dynamic QR codes (usually paid, though many tools include some on a free plan), scan tracking and analytics, export formats (PNG, SVG, PDF), and customization options (colors, logos, shapes).

Beyond features, price matters. On the pricing pages we checked on 17 October 2026, eleven companies print a US dollar annual total for an entry paid plan, or a monthly figure that multiplies out to one. Nine of those work out to between $60 and $120 a year on annual billing. QRForever is lower at $36 a year, and Flowcode is higher at about $300. QR-Verse prints euros, and QR Insights and Xcan.it print pounds, so we do not rank them against the dollar figures. Where the entry plan can be paid month to month, the US dollar prices we read run from $5 (LinkScan) to $19.99 (QR Code Generator Pro). Five companies sell their entry plan on annual billing only: Uniqode, Bitly, mobiQode, Scanova and The QR Code Generator. Ten of the 17 also publish a free plan that includes dynamic codes.

The Major Players

All plan details in this section were read on each company's own pricing or help pages on 17 October 2026.

QR Code Generator Pro (qr-code-generator.com, now part of Bitly) sells Starter, Advanced and Professional plans plus a custom Enterprise tier. Starter is $9.99 a month billed annually ($119.88 a year) or $19.99 billed month to month, and includes 2 dynamic codes and 10,000 scans. Advanced is $18.99 a month ($227.88 a year) for 50 dynamic codes, and Professional is $49.99 a month ($599.88 a year) for 250. Advanced and Professional are billed annually only. A 14-day free trial needs no credit card, and dynamic codes made on the trial are deactivated when it ends.

Beaconstac (now Uniqode) sells annual plans only: its pricing FAQ says it does not offer monthly billing. Essential is $9 a month billed yearly, which works out to about $108 a year, for 15 dynamic codes. Core is $49 a month billed yearly for 250 dynamic codes and adds an API. Plus ($99 a month) and Business+ ($399 a month) sit above that, and Enterprise pricing is custom. Static codes are free, and there is a 14-day free trial. The QR Code Generator (TQRCG, at the-qrcode-generator.com) is a separate product that Uniqode owns: its Free plan has 2 dynamic codes, and its Flex plan is $5 a month billed yearly (a $60 year), starting at 5 dynamic codes, with no month to month option and a 14-day trial. Bitly, known for link shortening, also offers QR codes, and each Bitly QR code is a scannable form of a short link. The Free plan allows 2 QR codes a month with no destination changes, and Bitly says free accounts now show an interstitial page with an ad. Core is $10 a month on annual billing only ($120 a year) for 5 QR codes and 5 redirects a month. Growth is $29 a month billed annually ($348 a year) or $35 billed month to month, for 10 QR codes a month, and adds branded links.

Several other tools publish lower prices or free dynamic codes. QRForever's Pro plan is $3 a month billed yearly ($36 a year) or $6 billed month to month, with unlimited dynamic codes and a 7-day free trial with no card. QR Tiger's Regular plan is US$7 a month for 12 dynamic codes, and its Free plan includes 3 dynamic codes capped at 500 scans each, with a QR Tiger logo popup. Hovercode and QRLynx each include 3 dynamic codes on a free plan, QRCodeChimp includes 10 with a cap of 1,000 scans a month and charges $9.99 a month for 50 codes, Flowcode includes 2, and ME-QR's free codes show ads. QRLynx's paid plans advertise scans that go straight to the destination without its brief opening screen, which the free plan has. ME-QR's Lite plan is $11.99 a month, or $7.33 a month billed yearly, and removes ads from one code in total. Scanova's Basic plan is $5 a month, billed annually only, for 3 dynamic codes, and it also sells Ultra Lite, a one-time $150 payment for a single dynamic code with lifetime validity. mobiQode's Mini plan is $5 a month for 10 dynamic codes.

Five newer or smaller tools are worth knowing. QR-Verse prints EUR 4.99 a month, or EUR 47.90 a year, for unlimited dynamic codes, and its Free plan has 1 dynamic code with an ad page on scans (honestqr.net/compare/qr-verse). QR Insights charges GBP 1.99 a month per QR code after 30 days free, with no tiers (honestqr.net/compare/qr-insights). LinkScan has a free plan with unlimited dynamic codes created at 3 a day and an Advanced plan at $5 a month (honestqr.net/compare/linkscan). Xcan.it gives 10 active dynamic codes free and charges GBP 12.50 a month billed annually (honestqr.net/compare/xcan-it).

QRCode Monkey is another generator often mentioned for free static codes. It is not one of the tools we checked, so we make no claims here about its current features or limits. See its own site.

What Happens When You Stop Paying

When you print a dynamic QR code, the printed material depends on the provider's redirect continuing to work. So before you print, read what the provider says happens when a plan ends. The published policies differ, and the summary below is what each company's own site said on 17 October 2026.

Seven of the 17 switch dynamic codes off or leave their fate unclear. Uniqode says your codes become inactive if you cancel, QR Tiger says codes stop working once the plan expires, QRForever deactivates them after the paid period (and says they are not deleted), Scanova says dynamic codes need an active subscription to keep working, and mobiQode says codes stay active until the subscription end date. QR Code Generator Pro keeps codes redirecting for 30 days after the paid period, then sends scans to a service page until you reactivate. QR Insights says a code cancelled during its trial is deactivated when the trial ends, and does not say what happens after a paid cancellation.

Five say all existing codes keep working. QR-Verse says existing codes keep working and you return to its Free plan. LinkScan says codes stay live after you cancel. Flowcode says codes on a downgraded account continue to scan, with only the 2 most recent still editable. Bitly says bit.ly links keep working after a downgrade. ME-QR says you can keep using your codes, but ads return.

Five keep some codes and pause the rest. Hovercode keeps your first 3 dynamic codes active, QRCodeChimp keeps the last 10, and QRLynx pauses only the codes above the limit of the plan you drop to. TQRCG keeps 2 dynamic codes with ads after a trial, and Xcan.it says codes stay active even on its free plan; neither says what happens to extra codes after a paid plan ends. Hovercode and QRLynx state that paused codes are not deleted and can be restored.

What to look for is a policy written down before you print: notice before anything is switched off, and codes that are paused rather than deleted, so that resubscribing brings the same printed codes back.

Where Honest QR Fits

At Honest QR, free static QR codes are available on the landing page without any account. A free account gives you a dashboard to save and manage up to 10 static codes.

Dynamic QR codes, scan tracking, and advanced export formats are available through three paid plans, each with a 7-day free trial: Starter, Pro, and Business (see current pricing at honestqr.net/#pricing). A card is required to start the trial but is not charged until the trial ends. Honest QR has no free dynamic codes. If you cancel, your codes keep working as normal until the end of your billing period. After that, editing, new dynamic codes and scan tracking pause until you resubscribe, and the codes keep redirecting as normal for a 7-day grace period, with an email before it ends. After the grace period they still work: scans pass through a short Honest QR notice before continuing to the destination. Nothing is deleted. For comparison with the policies above: QR Code Generator Pro keeps codes redirecting for 30 days after the paid period, against 7 days at Honest QR before the notice starts, and then sends scans to a service page. Five of the 17 say all existing codes keep working after you cancel, and five keep a few codes live on a free plan.

The Starter plan includes up to 12 dynamic codes, custom short links, 30-day scan history, and PNG, SVG and PDF export. The Pro plan raises that to up to 200 dynamic codes, 1-year scan history, and 3 templates. The Business plan adds up to 600 dynamic codes, unlimited scan history, geographic and device analytics, bulk CSV import, unlimited templates, and folders.

On price, we do not rank Honest QR against the field here, because the prices are in different currencies and the plans differ in code limits, trials and billing. Ten of the 17 companies include dynamic codes on a free plan, which Honest QR does not, and we have not checked every generator on the market. Choosing the Right Generator for Your Needs

If you only need static QR codes occasionally, a free static generator is enough. Honest QR's generator builds a static code and downloads it as a PNG with no signup, QRForever also runs a free static generator with no signup, and so does QR Insights. Static codes never expire.

If you need only a few dynamic codes, look at the free plans first. As of 17 October 2026, Hovercode and QRLynx each include 3 dynamic codes free, QRCodeChimp and Xcan.it include 10, TQRCG includes 2 with ads, QR-Verse includes 1 behind an ad page, and LinkScan includes unlimited dynamic codes created at 3 a day. Honest QR has no free dynamic codes: its 7-day free trial lets you test them before paying, and Starter can be billed monthly for a short project (a single event, a short campaign). Whatever service you choose, read its cancellation terms before you print.

If you need dynamic codes ongoing (business cards, product packaging, restaurant menus), compare the yearly cost and the code limit together. The entry paid plans we checked range from 2 dynamic codes (QR Code Generator Pro Starter) to unlimited (QRForever Pro and QR-Verse Pro), so the lowest price is not always the right fit. For API access, single sign-on, or several user seats, the larger platforms are the place to look: Uniqode puts its API on the Core plan, QR-Verse lists API access on Pro, and QR Code Generator Pro includes API requests from its Advanced plan.
