How to Print QR Codes on Avery Label Sheets

Printing QR codes on Avery labels looks simple until the first sheet comes out of the printer with every code half on one sticker and half on the next. Label sheets are unforgiving: the artwork has to be laid out to the exact die-cut template, printed at exactly 100% scale, and each code still has to be large enough to scan. Any artwork you print has to match that grid exactly. You cannot take a PDF that was designed as a plain page of QR codes and hope it happens to line up with a die-cut sheet. Not every Avery product suits a QR code. A code needs a roughly square area, a quiet zone around it, and a minimum printed size to scan reliably. That rules out the very small formats, such as 65-per-sheet return address labels, where each printed code would come out well under 20 mm. These are the mainstream Avery templates that work well:

Which one to pick depends on the job. For small stickers in volume, table tents, or product tags, L7160 (A4) and 5160 (US Letter) give you the most codes per sheet; note that 5160 codes print at roughly 21 mm, which is close to the practical minimum, so always test-scan a sheet before a full run. For product labels that carry a code plus a caption such as a title or short URL, the wide formats L7163 and 5163 leave room for text beside the code. For signage, larger packaging, or anything scanned from farther away, L7165 and 5164 print big codes above 55 mm that scan effortlessly.

How Small Can a Printed QR Code Be?

Scannability sets a hard floor on how many labels per sheet you can use. The ISO standard technically allows very small codes, but in practice a printed QR code below 20 mm (about 0.8 inches) starts failing on older phones, at an angle, or in poor light. Treat 20 mm as the floor and 25 mm or larger as the comfortable zone, especially for packaging that gets handled, curved, or scanned at arm's length. Size is not just the dark pattern itself. Every QR code needs a quiet zone: a clear margin around the code, four modules wide, that scanners use to find the code's edges. On a label, that means the code cannot run to the edge of the sticker. Keep at least 2 mm of clean background on all four sides, more for larger codes. Busy label backgrounds, borders, or text crowding the code all eat into the quiet zone and hurt scan rates.

Contrast matters just as much at label sizes. Dark modules on a light background scan best, and at 20 to 30 mm you have less error margin than on a poster. If your codes use brand colors, keep the foreground dark, keep the background light, and be more conservative than you would be at larger sizes.

One more factor that surprises people: what the code encodes changes how dense it is. A short redirect URL produces a sparse, forgiving pattern. Troubleshooting Misaligned Label Sheets

If your printed codes are not landing on their stickers, work through the causes in this order.

Check the print scale first. Reopen the print dialog and confirm the scale is exactly 100% or "Actual size", not "fit", "shrink", or any percentage other than 100. This causes the classic symptom of the top row looking fine while lower rows drift progressively further off.

Check the paper size second. An A4 template printed on US Letter paper, or the reverse, will misalign even at 100% scale because the sheet dimensions differ. The document's page size must match both the label product's paper size and the paper size selected in the printer settings.

Check the product number third. Many Avery products look similar at a glance but differ by a few millimetres in margins or pitch. A layout for one 21-label product will not fit a different 21-label product. Match the template to the exact product number printed on your label packaging.

If everything is set correctly and codes still sit slightly off, your printer may have a small feed offset. Test cheaply: print one page onto plain paper, lay it over a real label sheet, and hold both up to a bright light. You will see exactly where each code falls relative to the die-cuts before spending a single label sheet.
